This volume, a revised and updated special edition of Beard's first book (1965,) was published to accompany the first one-man exhibition of his work, at the International Center of Photography, NYC, 1977. The End of the Game looks at the history of East Central Africa and contrasts it to the 9 years Beard had lived there, to make clear how swiftly Old Africa had disappeared. The text and margins are sprinkled with 18th and 19th century engravings, archival photos, and Beard's drawings, and alternate between portfolios of his photographs.
