DJ/NF w/nips, chips & small losses to edges. PO name to first title page. Maps to endpapers. Frontispiece: Photo portrait of the Conways. The year, 1937; the place, Carmel, California. Ainslie Conway (1893 -), veteran of foreign wars against Moros in the Philippines, Pancho Villa in Mexico, and the Bonches at Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Wood, was seriouslu ill after a bout of working as a miner. Frances could only take on jobs as cook or gardner until school began and she could resume teaching highschool English. Down-and-out, the Conways focused on the Galapagos with dreams of living in the Encantadas for six months, which became 5 years and permanent.
