Historical study of California's early roadside inns and their role in the development of the state, from the Ash-Hopper Days to the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad. Includes an extensive bibliography. Octavo: v, 302 p. with numerous textual illustrations and a folding map. Original patterned red paper-covered boards over a blue cloth spine, with gilt titles. Small bookplate to the front pastedown, with a tiny ink notation to the rear pastedown; else near fine.
