New York, 1813. 7 pp. Folio. Fold split repaired with cello tape, just touching Astor signature. Paper seals attached, occasional light toning, creases. Sheets bound together with green ribbon. 7 pp. Folio. This original deed of trust concerns losses sustained in the first decade of the 19th century by the Columbia Insurance Company, incorporated in 1801 and one of the earliest American marine insurers. Facing insolvency from losses incurred by French depradations on American shipping, with this document the insurance company assigned their assets to Astor and his partners. Interestingly, the matter remained in the courts into the late 19th century, as the company pursued reimbursement under the French Spoliation Act. A rare document signed by America's first multi-millionaire relating to the early American insurance industry.
