William Combe's comic work about the fictional character 'Doctor Syntax', bound in half calf with Thomas Rowlandson's colour plates. The 'Chandos Classics' edition. Bound in half calf with marbled paper to the boards. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and one colour plate by Thomas Rowlandson. This comic work was written by William Combe and tells the story of Doctor Syntax and his three tours. The work satirised William Gilpin, an English artist and cleric, and his ideas of 'The Picturesque', and was originally illustrated in colour by the cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson.Undated, dated by copies found on Jisc. Bound in half calf with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with fading to the spine, rubbing to the joints, spine and extremities, marks to the boards, wear to the leather to the head of the spine, bumping to the extremities of the boards and rear joint starting slightly. Ink inscriptions to the front endpapers dated 1876 and 1949 with spotting to the endpapers and front hinges starting. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages and the odd spot throughout with scattered spotting to the front and rear. Bookplate belonging to 'Josceline Grove' to the front blank. Good
