About This Item

London: Cassell and Company, 1885-1887. First edition. Leather. Good. 7" by 4.5". Not Stated. A highly illustrated collection of detailed medical works written by three renowned doctors in their specified fields. First editions. Part of the Clinical Manuals For Practitioners And Students Of Medicine series. Collated complete as follows: Diseases of the Tongue contains eight coloured plates and numerous other vignette illustrations. Surgical Diseases of the Kidney contains six coloured plates and numerous other vignette illustrations. Plate IV has been bound as a frontispiece. The Diseases of the Breast contains eight coloured plates and numerous other vignette illustrations. All half-titles are present. This quarter leather first edition of the work was published without publisher's advertisements. Sir Henry Butlin was a British surgeon who was considered the father of British head and neck surgery. This work, entitled 'Diseases of the Tongue' is a highly informative instructional work for medical students and includes discussion regarding a number of diseases and infections relating to the tongue with many demonstrative pictures. Henry Morris was a lecturer and surgeon perhaps best known for his work The Anatomy of the Joints of Man. Morris was also the first surgeon to successfully remove a kidney stone from a patient, with the stone itself now preserved in the Hospital Museum. Morris a prolific author writing many highly detailed medical works including this one relating to surgical diseases of the kidney. Thomas Bryant was a senior surgeon and lecturer at Guy's Hospital. This work 'Diseases of the Breast' is unusual as it contains almost wholly evidence and information based upon Bryant's personal medical experience and does not rely on secondary medical evidence or cases. A fascinating three volume set of medical works, meant to educate, written by leaders in their respective fields and highly illustrated. In uniform quarter straight grain morocco with gilt detail to the spine. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the extremities, joints and spine resulting in some slight loss to the leather. Loss to spine label of 'Diseases of the Tongue'. Damp staining to boards of each volume. Hinges are slightly strained to each volume with frontispiece of 'Diseases of the Kidney' loosening. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and marginal age toning. Good
