He is best known for his work on Late Antique illuminations and illustrations, especially those in canon tables, which are of particular importance in the study of early medieval painting.
This is his masterful and comprehensive study of the illustrated and illuminated letters of the age just before the Early Medieval period, a seminal time in the history of medieval and Western paining and illustration.
