About This Item

Dr Ludwig Reichert Verlag, Wiesbaden, first edition, 2009. Laminated pictorial boards, 4to, 29 cm,. 240 pp, colour ills,. 85 items. In German and English. Catalogue of an exhibition, with 85 items described by specialists including Dr. Falk Eisermann, From the preface - "The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds the most important collection of incunabula world-wide when individual copies are counted: it preserves more than 20.000 printed books from the 15th century among its holdings, which represent around 9.700 different editions. ..The greatest part of the incunabula owned today by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek comes from the libraries of monasteries dissolved in the years 1803/1804 and subsequently brought to Munich. Around 1.140 incunabula survive from the early library of the Dukes and Electors of Bavaria in Munich - this collection alone is of considerable importance by modern standards. By contrast, only about 430 incunabula found their way to Munich from the court library of the Elector Karl Theodor in Mannheim.
