About This Item

Bookplate to front pastedown. eps tanned, splash to top of text-block and rear board, else VG in G-VG dustwrapper (worn with small closed tears along edges, spine soiled. no major loss or tears but some insect attrition on fold-in edges). "Pierneef painted Africa. His landscapes were different from anything seen in paint before. Baines, Oerder and others had painted the same scenes, but Pierneef saw them with new eyes. He created an original style out of this new subject matter" (Dr. Anton Hendriks). Pierneef's original style with simplified shapes and a small range of pale colours is instantly recognisable.
