About This Item
New York, NY: A.L. Burt, 1910. First Edition, Reprint . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Howard Heath (Illustrator). Text/As New. Gilt embossed maroon boards/NF. DJ/None. The Depot and the post office are one in the town of East Harniss, so master yarn-spinner of Cape Cod tales Joseph Crosby Lincoln (1870-1944) tells us. It was a tradition long standing that men folk should gather, after supper, to see the train come in and check mail, just as their women folk met at the sewing circle for social pleasures. It was a time when rich city folk were buying up the town for summer homes. So it was, Phinney (Carpenter, Well Driver, Building Mover, Cranberry Bogs Care & Dispatcher, etc, etc) and his good neighbor, retired Capt Solomon Berry and now Depot Master, heard that the mortgage of distressed, widowed Olive Seabury Edwards (whose drunken, husband had managed to enbib all her wealth before dying) had been bought up by one such wealthy newcomer, and Olive was to be out on the streets. The two honorable gentlemen rise to aid a damsel in distress.
