About This Item
New York, NY Simon & Schuster, 1952. Hardcover First Edition (July 1952), unstated. May be a later printing. Simon and Schuster was just changing it's FE designations at this time. Very Good in Good DJ: The Book shows indications of careful use: moderate shelving wear to the lower extremities, wit scant exposure of the underlying board at the heel of the backstrip and lower corner tips; faint coffee stains at the bottom edge of the text block (these penetrate about a quarter inch at the bottom edge of the front free endpaper and along the bottom edge of the front panel) and the bottom of the fore-edge; a small, peculiar stain at the top edge of the text block (perhaps caused by an insect); a couple of thin lines of oily residue at the outside edge of the front and rear free endpapers; the binding remains square and quite secure; the text clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing light wear and numerous minor, unobtrusive cosmetic flaws. The DJ shows fairly heavy wear: a couple of short tears at the bottom of the rear panel with some creases and some creasing at the top of same and also at the inside front flap; a small snag and a short tear at the top of the front panel; some loss to rubbing at the extremities; small faint coffee stains at the head of the backstrip; some faint generalized soiling to the rear panel; dampstaining to the backstrip; the price has been clipped; mylar-protected. Functional and for the most part intact, but showing multiple flaws. There was a separate caption pamphlet originally laid in. It is NOT present here. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Folio. (14.65 x 11 x 0.95 inches). 126 classic photographs by Cartier-Bresson, also provided a 14-page Foreward to the work. Conceived and composed by Teriade with the collaboration of Marguerite Lang. A Techical Report to the Photographs by Richard L. Simon. Pictorial paper-covered boards illustrated by Henri Matisse, who had just had his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, with matching pictorial dust wrapper. Language: English. Weight: 61.5 ounces. Published in Collaboration with Editions Verve of Paris, France. First Edition (July 1952), unstated. May be a later printing. Simon and Schuster was just changing it's FE designations at this time to explicit declarations. There is at least no explicit statement of subsequent printings. No date provided on the title page; only on the copyright page and we have been unable to discover any copy described as offering an explicit statement of First Edition - or for that matter, of First Printing. Hardback with DJ. A landmark book in the development of modern photography. Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 2004) was a French humanist photographer considered a master of the candid photograph, and an early user of 35 mm film. He pioneered the genre of street photography, and viewed photography as capturing "a decisive moment".
