Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Gilt lettering is darkened. Signs of water damage and staining to boards.

Tauchnitz edition, published the same year as the trade edition by Sampson Low & Marston. Considered Black's best work, the story is that of a young & spirited boy, son of a Presbyterian minister who lives on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. He falls for his cousin, a French girl who's disposition is at odds with the staunch Puritanism of the village. Black's gift for descriptive prose describes the Scottish scenery well.
