New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First American Edition. With 2 steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps. With three maps in pockets at back of each volume. xiv, [ii], 547,[1] ; xvi, 540 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Bound in three quarters red morocco with black leather title labels and marbled boards. First American Edition. With 2 steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps. With three maps in pockets at back of each volume. xiv, [ii], 547,[1] ; xvi, 540 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. In Darkest Africa retells Stanley's adventures on his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, governor of the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who was cut off after the fall of Khartoum. The expedition crawled at a snail's pace, covering only three or four hundred yards in an hour. Stanley nearly died of fever himself and he brought out of the forest only a third of the men he took in with him. This adventure, with descriptions of the forest and its animal life, as well as both vivid and valuable ethnological data regarding the Pygmy tribes, forms the content of In Darkest Africa. A superb copy of the classic of African exploration by the man who found Livingston.
