About This Item

Toronto: The Coach House Press, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Fine. Edition of 500 copies of which this is no. 255. 77 p. 23 cm. 2 full page b&w illustration pages. Brown cloth hardcover in mylar-covered dustjacket. Some wear to jacket rear panel at top, including one tear. Small bookseller's label on front free endpaper. Signed by author on half title.

Ondaatje's poetry is known for its unusual details and unexpected combinations, such as seen on p. 35 when a driver casually drives over two love-making birds, unshocked by the "flurry of red feathers." At rear the poet explores classical mythological themes in "O Troy's Down: Helen's Song." The last poem in the book, "Peter," is the author's personal favourite. Tucked inside this volume is a Booksmith Author Trading Card (# 546), ticket to one of the author's readings (Macmillan Theatre, U. of Toronto, Apr. 26, 2007) and a rather blurry photograph from a book signing.
