Book: Still retains the brilliant color contrast of the black/orange panels and author's distinct imprinted signature (photo). The back paste-on is significantly toned in the gutter area (photo).


The boards and spine are very firm and sturdy. The book lies flat and square (photo). Moderate toning on page edges, the unmarked pages themselves has very light toning.

No chronicle of 20th Century South African History can be written without mention of Alan Paton, and "Cry, the Beloved Country." The story has been published numerous times and in several languages. The story has been adapted into a film and stage play. Paton was a writer, poet, social activist, and a pioneer in the reform of the penal system.

Synopsis

Cry, the Beloved Country is a novel by South African author Alan Paton. It was first published in New York in 1948 by Charles Scribner's Sons and in London by Jonathan Cape; noted American publisher Bennett Cerf remarked at that year's meeting of the American Booksellers Association that there had been "only three novels published since the first of the year that were worth reading ... Cry, The Beloved Country, The Ides of March, and The Naked and the Dead.
