About This Item
London: Bickers & Son, 1884. First edition. Cloth. Good. 10.5" by 8.5". Anthony Salvin; B. Austin; Grimm. A first edition copy of this history of Cowdray House, which was one of England's great Tudor houses. The first edition of this scarce work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with a gilt crest to the front board. Illustrated with a frontispiece and twelve further plates. Collated, complete. Cowdray House in West Sussex was once one of England's great Tudor houses, architecturally comparable to many of that era's great palaces and country houses. It is now a ruin, due to a fire in 1793. Julia Anne Elizabeth Roundell (née Tollemache, daughter of Wilbraham Tollemache of Dorfold Hall, Cheshire), wrote this illustrated history of this intriguing house, including the so-called 'curse of Cowdray'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, though with marks to the boards and shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Good
