About This Item

London: Rupert Hart-Davis/Collins, 1956. A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis and Collins between 1956-79. Comprising: 'My Family and Other Animals': A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis in 1956. A very good book without inscriptions - previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper. Some light spotting to the page edge. In a very good (or better) dust wrapper which is unclipped - some light repair to the spine ends and some archival internal repair. Rare. 'Birds, Beasts and Relatives': A very good book with some light spotting to the page edges in a very good unclipped wrapper with some light tape repairs internally. 'The Garden of the Gods': A near fine book with a little spotting to the endpapers, in a near fine unclipped wrapper with one internal tape repair. A nice set of the three books which make up Durrell's 'Corfu Trilogy', the basis for the (now) popular ITV drama.

Synopsis

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise - My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy. Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family. ‘A delightful book full of simple, well-known things: cicadas in the olive groves, lamp fishing at night, the complexities of fish and animals - but, above all, childhood moulded by these things’ New York Times
