About This Item

Hardcover. Very Good/Not relevant. Miorande; (graveurs Baudier, A et P). Oeuvres Complètes Illustrées, Calmann-Levy, Paris, 1930; 4to, 200 x 260mm, pp 356 including bibliographies of the stories; illustrated with several wood engravings; bound uniformly with the other separate volumes of the set listed here, in quarter maroon morocco, colour matching buckram sides, titled and numbered gilt on the spine, untrimmed and with the original paper front cover bound in at the end; some old and light water staining with now cockled pages but still a handsome volume in overall good condition; complete in itself. ... ... ... ... ... NOTE that although the volumes are listed individually, or at least to provide sensible linking of volumes, we're happy to discuss with you groupings up to the complete present collection at appropriate discounts. France, earlier a journalist, became a writer of a range of stories, many characterised by their ironic and sceptical tone. A firm socialist he was also a strong defender of liberal causes such as in the Dreyfus affair. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921 and the following year his entire literary output was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a matter he considered a distinction.
