Lima: Con licencia del Real Govierno, 1739. Folio. [7] ff., 1138, 264338, 139614 [i.e., 146], 58 pp.
Bishop Agustin Rodríguez Delgado of La Paz called the Third Synod in 1738 and here publishes the measures ("constituciones") that were adopted and then became part of the canon law in force. Topics addressed include obligation to teach church doctrine, the sacraments, celebration of mass, burials, true and false religion, residences and benefices, conduct of a virtuous life, wills and testaments, and a variety of other do's and don'ts.
Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, and CCPBE locate only six copies in U.S. institutions, none in Britain or Ireland, three in Spain, and an incomplete copy in Chile.
Evidence of readership: An early reader has written "ojo" ("pay attention") in sepia ink in several margins and a 19th- or 20th-century reader has in pencil commented on changes in practice or expressed surprise at the content of certain passages.
Curiously, none of the bibliographies call for a frontispiece engraving and only one among the U.S. and Chilean copies has one (Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University); but all three copies in Spain have an engraving of Our Lady of the Peace. None is present here.
Sabin 16070; Medina, Lima, 924; Vargas Ugarte, Impresos peruanos, 1466. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of ties; may lack a frontispiece. A clean, crisp, and broad-margined copy.
