About This Item

London England: Heinemann. Very Good/Good. 1966. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Slight shelf wear and very small tear to top edge of D/J. This book is at one level a frightening suspense story which builds remorselessly towards the perpetraition of an appalling crime; at a second, it is a study of three confliction age-groups and backgrounds; and at a third, aand more profoundly, it is a disturbing novel about sexuality. Or rather, about the stresses imposed on society by the conflict between idealized concepts of love and naked physical realities. Braddon, in the bast, has written about wartime captivity, the French Resistance, show business, persecution in the Deep South, psychiatric wards, a bomber pilot, a prima donna, a press baron, London's criminal fringe and Australia's somewhat hilarious world role in the year 1999. 'If I've got to do all that work,' he has sold, 'at least I can make sure it's about something different every time, so that I'm note bored, whoever else may be'. In this book he has chosen a setting so bizarre - yet so apt - that, far from allowing boredom, he has produced a book two-thirds of whic is compelling, while the last third is sheer nail-biting terror. 204 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
