About This Item

The University Of Chicago Press, 1979. Hardcover. Fine. New books . A facsimilie of the First Edition , 1765 - 1769 . Four hardbound volumes in a slipcase . Complete set . ISBN : 978-0-226-08033-8 . Blackstone's work was the first great attempt to reduce the English common law to a unified and rational system . He demonstrated that the English law as a system of law was at least equal to Roman law and the civil law of the continent . In particular , he established what he saw as the essentially human inspiration of the English common law . Blackstone's writing was remarkable , resulting in a literary masterpiece as well as a legal classic . His work exerted a powerful influence on law education and the practice of law , both in Great Britain and America , from the time of publication until the end of the Nineteenth Century . In America it was the standard for lawyers from Chief Justive Jay to Chief Justice Chase . Both Chief Justice Taney and the praire lawyer , Abraham Lincoln , rooted their understanding of the law in the " Chitty " version of Blackstone's work--even though they saw fundamentally diifferent precedents in it . This set is beautifully bound in cloth and housed in a very sturdy slipcase . Still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap .
