About This Item
[Printed by E. & J. Wright]. [1807]. Folio (370 x 215mm), [18], 303, [1], 1-100, [2], [69]-232, [2], 79-80, [26], 98, [2], 109-156, 257-993 [i.e. 393], [1]pp., q2 with fore-edge torn-away effecting text (see photos supplied), engraved portrait on title, inner hinges broken, contemporary green vellum backed boards, printed spine label, spine heavily darkened, split to upper joint, base of spine torn, uncut. The first reprint of the first edition in its original form. Unlike modern methods of producing facsimiles, this edition was produced by painstakingly setting the type in such a way as to replicate the layout and appearance of the original. "Edited by Francis Douce. This, the first reprint of the first edition in its original form, was executed by J. Wright, St. John's Square, Ln. Wm. Upcott discovered errors, and set to work to collate it with the original. After one hundred and forty-five days' attention, he compiled a list of 368 errors. This fact coming to the notice of John and Arthur Arch, the Cornhill booksellers, two promoters of the supposed facsimile, they importuned him to sell the list to them. Eventually he consented, expecting fair remuneration for his five months' close work. All he received was a copy of the reprint, published at five guineas." Jaggard. Jaggard, p.510.
