About This Item
8vo, rebound modern paper board with paper spine label, new endpapers, illustrated, 156 pp. Lacks original endpapers, slight wear and fading to binding, normal browning and aging, some foxing; otherwise very good.
A rather scarce title, despite the fact that it was produced in a number of editions. The OCLC locates only one copy of this edition. Mathew Carey (1760-1839) appears to have published this spelling book for a number of years. Carey was one of Philadelphia's most successful publishers, who put out a newspaper for a couple of years, as well as many books and pamphlets. He was even wounded in a duel with a rival newspaper publisher in 1786. This little book has numerous illustrations to help with the lessons, and we are told in the preface this work has been improved, and that the lessons have been extracted from The New English Spelling Book, which was highly respected at the time. OCLC. ANB.
