About This Item
Synopsis
Theodore Roethke (1908 – 1963) was an American poet whose works are known for his touching lyricism and steady rhythm. Many of his poems hearken to themes of earth and growing things, much like Whitman, although his experiences are drawn from his time working in his family's greenhouse as a young man. In a dark wood I saw— I saw my several selves Come running from the leaves, Lewd, tiny careless lives That scuttled under stones, Or broke, but would not go.
