Prev owner name inked neatly on ffep. Fore edge rough cut, top edge dyed brown. Some pages uncut. Light brown cloth w gilt border and gold lettering on front cover, gold lettering on spine w gilt bands on head and tail. Small scuff to bottom corners. Binding square, joints and hinges sound. DJ shows mild soiling to spine commensurate w handling, shallow chipping to head and tail and corners. Single triangular chip to top front edge to 1.5cm, 2cm diagonal tear to bottom front edge neatly closed. DJ now preserved in archival cover. First trade edition, first printing, U.S. issue with First Trade Edition on verso of title leaf and misprint on line 8, p. 128 where "laces" should read "faces". This first printing of the trade edition was uncorrected from the limited signed issue of 1,000 copies. In the second and subsequent printings, the error laces is corrected to faces (Amherst College Library).
