String-bound illustrated wrappers 32 pages 6.25 by 4.75 inches (16.5 by 12 cm), Wraps embossed and have a multicolor border design of grapes, cocktail glasses and faces; calligraphic first page; includes a lovely gilt-adorned print of Uncle Sam drinking Clysmic soda water. First Edition.
Wraps are larger than the text block; wraps have age-toning, a few top edge chips and a minor scuff on the rear. The text block is tight and square. Text clean with two tiny ink marks on page 2, light even toning. Faint damp-stain on foredge of the first four pages.
Uncommon with only two copies held in Institutions. [Yale and Univ of Minn]. This promotional bar manual comprises of cocktail recipes made with Clysmic water. The majority of the formulas are accompanied by period toasts. At the bottom of each page is a slogan advertising Clysmic brand table water.
Background Information:
The Clysmic Springs Water and Mineral Company was based in Waukesha, Wisconsin around 1868 and remained in business until 1918. Originally called the Waukesha-Lithia Springs Company, this company remained in business for many years although it later changed the company's name to the Clysmic Springs Table Water Company.
When founded, Waukesha quickly became the Mineral Springs Capital of the U.S., and thousands of people literally flocked to the city from all points in the U.S. to partake in the city's water. The visitors not only drank the water but bathed in the water hoping to gain strength from the water's medicinal qualities.
