About This Item
This coming-of-age story set in the Midlands of Victorian England follows Edwin Clayhanger as he leaves school, takes over the family business and falls in love. Bennett wrote it in 1910 at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton, and in Lausanne. It is his 18th novel.
The Clayhanger Family is a series of novels published between 1910 and 1918. Though the series is commonly referred to as a "trilogy", and the first three novels were published in a single volume, as The Clayhanger Family, in 1925, there are actually four books. All four are set in the 'Five Towns', Bennett's thinly disguised version of the six towns of the Potteries district that merged into Stoke-on-Trent. All of these novels were produced as TV series.
574 pages, 5 ¼" x 7 ½".
This copy is a bit of a curiosity. It was published by Methuen London in 1962. It was purchased by Britannia Secondary School in Vancouver, whose staff stamped the endpaper and attached the borrowing card sleeve (you can remove these). But it never made it onto the shelves. No one ever borrowed it, and it has clearly never been read. While there is lots of wear on the dust jacket, the rest of the book is absolutely pristine, inside and out.
