About This Item

Paris: H. Delloye; V. Lecou, 1838. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". None. A leather bound copy of Alfred de Vigny's novel inspired by the seventeenth century Marquis of Cinq-Mars. An early edition of Alfred de Vigny's novel inspired by Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars. Published in French, with a folding plate to the second volume. King Louis XIII's first minister, Cardinal Richelieu, introduced the young marquis of Cinq-Mars to the king hoping to use the child to wield greater control over the king. Cinq-Mars quickly established himself as a royal favourite, but pressed the king for important favours and tried to convince the king to have Richelieu executed. Consequently, Richelieu had Cinq-Mars imprisoned and beheaded the marquis along with his accomplice. Prior owner's book plate to the verso of the front endpaper. The volumes previously belonged to August Edith Hewett. In a quarter calf binding over brown patterned boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the rear board of volume I. Rubbed to the spine, particularly to the head of each volume where the calf is scuffed. A little bumped to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with patches of light foxing. Very Good
