With descriptions of the later exotic grapes, and a select list of the native varieties by Dr. George Thurber, illustrated." xi, [1], 11-211, [1], 8 p., frontispiece: in-text illustrations; 19 cm. Dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and decoration; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Green floral endpapers. Covering part of the imprint on the title page is a blue and white shield-shaped label for "Michell's Fresh Tested Seeds Phila." Includes "Supplemental List of Exotic Grapes." Publisher's catalog on final 8 pages. William Chorlton (1811-1889) was an English gardener who came to the United States in 1848 and became head gardener for John C. Green, New Brighton, Staten Island. His book on grapes, first published in 1852 as American Grape Growers' Guide, was popular for many years. The label on the title page was for Henry F. Michel Co., seed and tree dealer in Philadelphia. In Very Good- Condition: ends of spine and corners rubbed; hinges weak; 4x4-cm. section of pp. 27-28 lacking at lower gutter, with minor loss of text; one leaf of publisher's catalog creased; pages are clean and tight.
