About This Item
London: Methuen, 1946. A first edition, first printing published by Methuen in 1946. A very good book with off-setting and sunning to the spine and to the edges. SIGNED and inscribed on the front endpaper 'For Maud/with love from/Alan/June 22/46.' In a very good unclipped dust wrapper with some nicking to the edges and a little loss to the top of the spine. In 1905, Alan Milne's brother, Ken, and Maud Lilian Innes married at Marylebone, London. By 1911, he was in government service as Clerk of the Upper Division, Estate Duty Officer, Somerset House. He and his wife had settled at Ealing, Middlesex. This was A A Milne's first novel for 13 years, and, though it would be his last, it was well-received: "'The Old Enchanter has done it again,' one of the American papers said. There was a general feeling that Milne had produced something rather original, certainly something quite different from anything he had written before" (Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life). Signed to his sister-in-law, Maud by Milne.
