According to Kathleen Lines in her introduction to the 1938 edition, "Darton" will never be supplanted." In that vein, Alderson has followed the standards of modern scholarship, added a number of bibliographical notes, filled out the discussion of children's books during the late Victorian and Edwardian period, and more than sixty new illustrations have been added.
