About This Item

J.B.Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1882. Acceptable. Comprises 8 vols. of 15-vol. set; three-quarters leather with sepia, blue and white marbled boards and marbled edges, raised edges on spine, gilt lettering worm away. All but one have engraved frontis. ill. with tissue guards. All volumes unmarked--not ex-lib., no former owner's name-- but are in various conditions. All are lavishly illustrated with ill. by Cruikshank, Phiz, Barnard, among others--full-page without foxing, making them tempting to frame. Volume in best condition is "Christmas Stories"/and, Reprinted Pieces;" "Martin Chuzzlewit is missing frontis.; "Tale of Two Cities"/"Sketches by Boz" has cracked front gutter and considerable bumping on corners; "Oliver Twist"/"American Notes"/"The Uncommercial Traveler" has cracked front gutter, with signature for front matter detached; "Bleak House" has cracked front gutter and what looks like possible scorch marks on first few pages, causing chipping to edges; "Dombey and Sons" good but with smudge on back of marbled front end page; "Barnaby Rudge"/and, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" has cracked front gutter and closed tear in margin of p. 369; "A Child's History of England"/"The Holly Tree Inn, and Other Stories" has a few faint smudges on backs of front end pages.
