BINDING/CONDITION: from a series with semi-uniform bindings; brown with gilt decorations; leather at the spine; raised spine bands; all edges gilt; ribbon place marker; Fine condition.. 8vo (8.25 inches tall) . Index. Marbled endpapers. Description: Includes a laid in letter from the publisher and a laid in bookplate showing this to be copy number 13822. (This bookplate is imprinted with the name of the owner.) This is a volume from the Notable Trials Library under the general editorship of Alan M Dershowitz who wrote a special introduction for this facsimile edition. This was originally published by Macmillan in 1972. The publisher's letter declares, ''Twenty-two-year-old Patricia Burton Lonergan's violent death, one of the most sensational crimes of the 1940s, pushed the war news off the front pages and gave the public a glimpse into a fabled world of abundant money, power, and sex, a world seemingly devoid of workaday cares. Patricia and her privileged set partied afternoon and night. The Stork Club was their habitat. A mesmerized press had a field day. Legal and moral issues abound in the compelling account of this troubling case. Hamilton Darby Perry's text sets the scene expertly while providing ample evidence of sloppy handling of the case all around. Citing trial transcripts and transcripts of Lonergan's statements and reviewing his own research, Perry raised more questions than were ever answered. An afterword written expressly for this edition gives Mr. Perry's reflections on the case since the book was first published.'' Book design by Daniel B Bianchi and Selma Ordewer.
