About This Item
London: Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd,, 1911. First edition, first impression, of the author's first book of short stories of a supernatural or fantastical nature. The first impression comprised 1,000 copies, and a second impression of 500 followed within eight months of publication. The endpapers were designed by Roger Fry. A contemporary review in The English Review noted that "the half-dozen stories in this book are full of the finest wiring: humour, tenderness, and a touch of malice sometimes - malice smiling through tears, the clear-sightedness of the humane ironist... Some of Mr Forster's best work is in this book, together with the secret of his other books." Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover decorated in gilt, rear cover with publisher's device in blind, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Extremities very slightly bumped, some minor foxing; a near-fine copy. Kirkpatrick A5a. The English Review, June 1911, pp. 532-3.
