First published 1941; this Revised & Enlarged 2nd Edition has a new chapter on the development of southern California, correction of a number of errors, revised style/phraseology, transfer footnotes to text rea, expanded Appendix, bibliography and additional illustrations. The volume is a socio-economic history of the formative years of what proves to be distinctive to southern California with major emphasis on the period between the Gold Rush (1849 - 1851) and the completion of the Pacific Railroad some two decades later, and particular focus to the so-called Los Angeles basin of the pastoral south. Fine copy in lesser dust jacket.
