Perrett, tissue guard; f'cap. 8vo; qr. vellum, spine lettered in gilt, brown papered boards with bevelled edges, corners a trifle worn; t.e.g., others uncut; ribbon marker; brown endpapers, lightly marked, a little light foxing; one of 1,000 copies printed in Scotch roman type on Fabriano handmade paper at The Tomoye Press for Paul Elder & Company, San Francisco, 1907. Western Classics series No. 2 [of 4]. *Typography designed by John Henry Nash. Short story first published in a San Francisco paper in 1871, under the pseudonym of 'Caxton' . The author, a lawyer interested in scientific research, alleges that 'by the use of potassium, water could be set on fire, and that anyone possessing this baneful secret could destroy the world' [Introduction, p. ii].
