About This Item

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1894.. [1],viii,379pp., including in-text illustrations and full-page maps and plates. Original two-tone cloth, gilt, gilt leather label, t.e.g. Cloth lightly rubbed, scuffed, and shelf worn, spine a bit darkened. Hinges cracked, but holding firm; bookplate on front pastedown and gift inscription on front fly leaf. Very clean internally. Very good overall. Profusely illustrated "with full cartographical illustrations from contemporary sources." "Neither the cartographical nor the historical side of the study is slighted and, without parade of learning, the results of a profound though special erudition are given in each chapter. Equally interesting and thorough, it is a standard of what such writing should be. The illustrations are also a strong feature of the book. It abounds with excellent reproductions of plans, portraits, and early maps" - Larned. LARNED 3689.
