A New Translation , Backgrounds, and Criticism. Clean and bright card cover in orange and white with black lettering with liiustration. Slight wear to cover edges,light crease down hinge, some text red ink underlined up to page 77, doesn't affect easy readability, and on page one, there is text yellow highlighted. Text block edges clean and white. On the first page encountered when opening the cover, there is a type written "Can You Stop Evil" essay on Candide and Frankenstein that is fixed to two pages in front and two pages in back (not on text pages). On the second title page, there is a red ink humorous drawing. Pages are white and text is clear. and clean. Candide was first published in 1759, set out as the work of "Dr. Ralph", not as written by M. de Voltaire, the well-known poet, tragedian, historian, philosopher, and friend of Frederick the Great. The story of a gentle man pummeled by fate who clings to the belief that he lives "in the best of all possible worlds". It is an amusing book--but also cruel and destructive and funny. Candide's cruelty is not sour, and it remains fun. There's something in it for everyone, and deserves its designation as a "classic". viii +194 pages with bibliography. 8.6 x 5.2 inches. 1966, Norton & Co, New York, New York, USA
