About This Item

London: George Routledge and Sons, 1882. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. A brilliant Victorian military novel by Scottish author James Grant. James Grant (1822-1887) was a Scottish novelist and a distant relation of celebrated poet, Sir Walter Scott. He wrote around ninety books, including fifty-six novels, most of which focused on the military and history of Scotland, including many memoirs and histories as well as his fiction writing. His books were all published by Routledge and Sons as yellowbacks, cheap novels produced in competition with the penny dreadful. This edition has been rebound from a yellowback copy. A tale of the Scottish regiment 'The Scottish Cameronian Rifles'.Undated ownership bookplate to the front pastedown to 'James Maclean, 33 Cowley Road, Oxford'. Most likely belonged to James Noël MacKenzie MacLean (1928-1978), a Scottish historian and author who studied at Lincoln University, Oxford. In a half calf binding with a lovely gilt spine and marbled boards. Externally generally smart, some rubbing to the boards. Undated ownership bookplate to the front pastedown and stamp of same name to front endpaper. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean, minor spotting to front and back endpapers. Very Good Indeed
