1863. Very Good +. 31 pieces of business correspondence written to America's oldest varnish manufacturer, C. Schrack & Co., established in Philadelphia in 1816 by Christian Schrack. Over time, the company's product line expanded from varnishes to include paint, pigment, oil, lacquer, turpentine, whiting, and other related products. After Schrack's death in 1854, the company was run by his former apprentice, Joseph Stulb. During the Civil War, they added window glass, palette knives, and imported goods from Europe to their line. Written from 1863 to 1877, these letters are from Henry T. Ingalls, N.Y.; S.H. & A. Burrows, Pictured Rocks; Warrick & Stanger, Glassboro; Edward Haslam, N.Y.; Jacob S. Hershey, Manheim, Pa.; J. M. Cox & Brother, Middleton; Crow & Parsons, Wilmington; J. C. Seydell & Co., Milton; J. H. Waters, Staunton, Va.; Henry Bergey, Perkiomen; Edward Hill, N.Y.; James Hildreth, Wilmington; B. M. Fordan, N.Y.; and C. P. Staab & Co., N.Y., among others. In Very Good+ Condition: a few small closed tears from edges; occasion light soiling.

Exmouth, Eng, 1800. Very Good. 1 folded sheet creating 4 pages; handwritten letter on 2 pages (signed), 1 page blank, address on the 4th page. Teignmouth notes that "Lady Teignmouth has lately presented me with another son." The engraved portrait (drawn by J. Richmond, engraved by W. Walker) was published by Hatchard & Sons in 1843. John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth (1751-1834) was an official of the East India Co. and served as Governor General of Bengal from 1793 to 1797; the following year he was created Baron Teignmouth. He was also the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society. In Very Good Condition: letter is lightly creased; lightly soiled; print is lightly soiled in margins; indentation at upper edge; image is clean and crisp.

1898. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter on both sides of a piece of Naval and Military Club stationery with the club emblem and a black border, dated 13 July 1898. General Bindon Blood (1842-1940), a British Army commander who served in India, Southern Africa, and Afghanistan, is responding to an invitation. He was in London briefly in the summer of 1898 after being appointed major general and before returning, as he references here, to the Meerut district of India, "which is one of the very best commands in India." He was appointed in command of that district in September 1898. Although he spend part of 1901 fighting in the Second Boer War, he returned to India later that year. In 1907 he retired to London. Winston Churchill served under Blood in 1897 and dedicated The Story of the Malakand Field Force to him. In Near Fine Condition: small discoloration on the first side; otherwise, clean and crisp.

1808. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose, dated 3 May 1808, London, responding to a request from Lt. Col. Simpson for scheduling the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry for two weeks at Stirling. James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836), was a member of Parliament in 1780 and from 1784 to 1790 and is said to be responsible for the repeal of the act prohibiting the wearing of tartans in 1782. He was Master of the Horse from 1790 to 1795, and from 1807 to 1821, during which period this letter was written. In Very Good Condition: creasing; darkened along upper edge; light ink from another letter placed on top while damp.

Herter, Jr., who was to join Nixon's staff. Bears stamp of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission in lower corner. Christian A. Dickinson, Esq., New Lisbon, Ohio, about whether his son could get a position at the "Public Printer." John Sherman (1823-1900) represented Ohio in the U. S. Senate from 1861 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1897. From 1877 to 1881 he was Secretary of the Treasury, and in 1897 and 1898 he was Secretary of State. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is named after him. General William Tecumseh Sherman was his brother. No. 12 of the Brooklyn Fire Department. The list of members, with street addresses, attached to the front free endpaper names Stephen Allen as the foreman. Allen was born in 1853 and became a fireman in 1880, assistant foreman in 1887, and foreman in 1889. It provided a daily record of the activities of the fire engine company from Oct. 25, 1890, through June 8, 1891. A heavy book; for international shipping, it will have to be sent by priority international. In Very Good Condition: loss of leather from spine; edges rubbed; cocked; cover is soiled; front free endpaper is detached but present; some page corners creased; internally clean and solid.

1823. Very Good +. 1 handwritten letter, dated 6 March 1823, from Lord Thomas Cochrane to Captain David Porter of the U.S. Navy expressing condolences over the death of Lt. Cocke, who was killed when the Spanish commander in San Juan fired to warn the American ships from entering the port. Lord Thomas Cochrane (1775-1860), later Admiral, had earned the nickname The Sea Wolf during the Napoleonic Wars before being dismissed from the Royal Navy in 1814 following a conviction for fraud on the Stock Exchange. In 1818 he went to Chile and became First Vice Admiral of its navy, leading it during the Chilean war of independence against Spain. In 1820 he was was active in achieving independence for Peru. He left the Chilean Navy on 29 Nov. 1822. Cochrane was apparently on his way to Brazil on 6 March 1823 when this letter was written. On 21 March 1823 he took command of the Brazilian Navy. , . 5 1/8" x 6 3/4" signed letter from Robert Dale Owen (1801-1877) dated May 5, 1865 at Cincinnati and addressed to publishers Mssrs. Tickner & Fields, acknowledging receipt of $50 as payment for his article on Hofwyl appearing in Atlantic Magazine that month, a fond history of his years at Hofwyl school, the independent self-governing private college in Switzerland to which Owen credited the molding of much of his character and philosophy. In addition to his notorious involvement with social reforms, Robert Dale Owen served in the Indiana legislature and the U.S. House Of Representatives (1843 to 1847), where he introduced and secured passage of the bill to establish the Smithsonian Institution, for which he was appointed to its first board of regents.
