London; Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1899., 1899. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION, gift inscribed by the Author. Octavo, pp. [4] catalogue, xix, [1], 239, [1]. 4 colour plates as called for, including frontispiece with tissue guard, plus 340 figures within text. Publishers' red cloth with gilt titles to spine and decoration in blind to boards including "The International Scientific Series" emblem. Cover cloth lightly toned and sunned to spine, with bump at head and minor wear to tips. Gift inscription in ink to half-title: " Muriel Percy from Lord Avebury" with note in pencil to verso ffep that the recipient is likely Lady Muriel Percy, the daughter of the Seventh Duke of Northumberland and that Lord Avebury was the title which Sir John Lubbock assumed in 1900. A Very Good copy. Sir John Lubbock (1834-1913), the English banker and polymath who made significant contributions in the fields of archaeology and biology, was an influential figure in the debate on evolutionary theory who regularly corresponded with Charles Darwin. He coined the terms "Paleolithic" and "Neolithic" to denote the Old and New Stone Ages, and became the first President of the British Beekeepers Association. Scarce.
