About This Item
Firmin Didot, Paris: ., 1806 ff. (6) [May lack a half-title], 263. 12 mo. 180 mm. Signatures irregularly signed, but pagination is apparently complete. Simple leather backed boards binding. Hardbound. Very Good. Firmin Didot (1764-1836) was a French printer, engraver, type founder, and scholar. Born in Paris into a family of printers and paper makers founded by Franois Didot. Firmin was one of his grandchildren. Didot invented the word "stereotype", which in printing refers to the metal printing plate created for the actual printing of pages (as opposed to printing pages directly with movable type). He was also the author of two tragedies; and he wrote metrical translations into French from Virgil, and others. This is the First Edition of Didot's translation, and the first book published by Didot. A wonderful typographic work which includes the first use of his cursive script - a typeface called 'Anglaise' which was of his own design and from his own type foundry. A famous edition. The book won the gold medal of the exhibition of products of the French industry organized by the Imperial regime of Napoleon in 1806. An important book in the history of printing. Brunet V: 1302; Updike I, p.218. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!! CHEST 2 /1. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Very Good.
