About This Item
Columbus, OHio: Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Engine Men, 1914. Octavo. pp. 401-525, plus preliminaries, ads. Several full page detailed ads of brake devices (some in color), Besides the many articles on air brakes, there are dozens of technical articles on other equipment (including an electric power that might surpass steam). The article on "fireman and firing" p. 202-203 shows the danger as coal supplies dwindle. There is an article on immigration which is says has brought in "a large population of untrained and unadapted races of south and east Europe...they have lowered the wage standard of the American population." There is a long article "War Prices in the United States" which accuses the monopolies of big business of having obscene profits. The chart of pages 509-510 lists death and disability claims. Besides heart attacks and various other serious maladies it notes boiler explosions, derailments, struck by train, ran over by train, suicides and several others. Bound in pictorial paper wraps, old tape repair to spine with some chipping. A good copy.
