About This Item
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1909. Very Good. Quarto; pp v (xvi) 271 (279, colophon); 31 tipped in colour plates as called for with captioned tissue guards; original red cloth covered boards lettered in gilt with four hunting scenes enclosed in circles.
Recently rebacked in red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine; bookplate of King Edward VII's Hosptal for Officers on paste down; discrete stamp of same on lower corner of ffep; gift inscription from A. Gardner-Waterman to Sister Agnes. The inscription reads: To Sister Agnes and the King Edward VII Hospital / from a most grateful patient/ A. Gardner-Aterman.
Clean throughout with one plate detached but present. Lt Col. Alan Gardner-Waterman (1882 - 1953) was educated in Sutherland House School in Folkestone from the age of eight, then Uppingham from 1896 - 1899, before attending the Royal Military Academy, Woolich. In 1900 he received his commission in the Royal Field Artillery and served in India before serving in France, WWI. He was wounded twice, and it would seem from the gift inscription that at least on one of these occasions he was cared for by the staff of the King Edward VII Hospital for Officers.
Sister Agnes and Fanny Keeper founded the Hospital in 1899 when they devoted themselves and their home to caring for sick and wounded officers returning from the second Boer War. King Edward VII became the Hospital's first patron in 1901.
This beautifully illustrated book on British Sport was no doubt intended for the pleasure of recuperating officers and has been gently used.
