About This Item

Andre Deutsch Ltd, London, first edition, 1973. Cloth, 8vo,. xv, 405 pp, ills. This volume comprises "a classified and annotated selection of works, from the invention of printing to the present day" providing "for the first time a bibliographical outline of the book trade's history and workings". It is "mainly based on the library of the National Book League, which consists of some 8,500 books and periodicals covering all aspects of the book trade, and that of the St Bride Institute, which possesses many rare and early books, particularly on printing...The contents, which cover the organized commerce of books, are listed under thirteen main sections: Authorship; Bookbinding; Bookselling; Book Design and Production; Book Illustration; Children's Books; History of the Book Trade; Law Relating to the Book Trade; the Net Book Agreement; Paper for Bookwork and Printing Ink; the Printing of Books; Private Presses; and Publishing. Full bibliographical data is given for each entry, and although in general only works in book form are listed, each section is appended by a list of relevant periodicals and trade journals to give a fair guide to sources. An attractive feature of the book is the thirty-two black and white reproductions of eighteenth-and nineteenth-century engravings and woodcuts which illustrate each aspect of the book trade covered" - from the blurb.
