About This Item

Paris: Albert Morance, 1925. First Edition, First Printing. Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued.

A string-tied portfolio from the "Documents d'Architecture" Coth spine to boards with embosed front emblem and titles. 46 pages, as issued, cardstock pages consisting of 18 pages of text [French] and 32 loose fine pochoir-colored plates after early 19th century copper engravings. 11 inches tall.

The portfolio has spine fading and hand soling. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Pages and plates all present.. The plates represent striking examples of First Empire (1804-15) storefront designs including perfumeries, watch makers, cafes, milliners, pharmacies, fashion salons..... each with a Paris street address.

The original renderings are kept in the Cabinet des Estampes at the Bibliothèque Nationale.

Background Information:
Pochoir is a stencil-based printing technique popular from the late 19th century through the 1930's, with its center of activity in Paris. It was primarily used by illustrators and designers to create patterns and architectural design prints.

These were used during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and at the peak of its popularity in the early 20th century, there were as many as thirty graphic design studios in France using this technique, each employing up to 600 workers.
