Front paste down foxed. Frontispiece dampstained, transferring to a lesser degree to the title page. Text and plates generally clean, with occasional off-setting and a dot of foxing. Each issue of The Botanical Magazine was sold separately. Beginning in 1787, it became the longest running botanical magazine published. Each issue contains a full description in formal yet accessible language, and is renowned for featuring the work of two centuries of botanical illustrators.Many plants received their first publication on the pages and the description given was enhanced by the finely detailed illustrations. The plates were copper engraved and the hand colouring was performed by up to thirty people.

The first eight volumes of this important botanical periodical, bound in four. 287 gloriously hand-colored botanical plates, complete for these volumes. Contemporary 18th century half calf over boards; leather spine labels (the 4th volume with a later label). Beautiful, bright examples of the plates. This enormously successful, long-running periodical would remain in print until the middle of the 20th century.
