First Edition. 8vo., A fine copy in salmon colored cloth with white & black titles & decorations in Bernard Krigstein illustrated dustwrapper showing a couple of tiny chips & tears. The story of August Bondi who in 1848 at the age of 15 fought on the barricades in Vienna. He made his way to America & shocked at the slavery he saw in New Orleans, ended up with John Brown & his seven sons fighting against people like the pro-slavery Border Ruffians. After John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry & his subsequent capture & hanging, he joined Company K, Fifth Kansas where he was badly wounded. After the war he became a revered citizen of Salina & at age 63 after much application passed the bar exam & became a lawyer. A great citizen, a man of action, a tender father, a reverent Jew, his life is a challenge & an inspiration. This is the author's second book, but first title for children & winner of the Jewish Council Award for 1958, he later won the Newbery Award for his novel, The High King.
