About This Item

Scarecrow Press, Metuchen, first edition, 1992. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. 525 pp, ills. (some in colour). 5,180 entries. This is a splendid bibliographical catalogue of the books, journals and manuscripts held by The Bakken Library and Museum of Electricity in Life. The Bakken was founded by Earl Bakken, inventor of the first wearable cardiac pacemaker : the focus of the Bakken collection is on the historical role of electricity and magnetism in the life sciences and medicine, thus encompassing the history of electricity and magnetism, electrophysiology, electrotheraputics, and accompanying instrumentation. It also includes many works from the mesmerist movement. The collecting emphasis is on materials from the 18th, 19th,and early 20th centuries. The catalogue entries include full bibliographical and provenance information, including cross-references to the Wheeler, Gartrell and Ronalds catalogues. Some entries are also briefly annotated. Books and manuscripts are arranged by author within four chronological groupings for early works (pp 3-30) and works of the 18th (pp 31-119), 19th (pp 120-329) and 20th (pp 321-487 pp) centuries. There is an index of authors. Fine.
