London: Frederick Warne, 1907. Book. Fair. Hardcover. 4to - Landscape. Thirty-eighth authentic edition, pp. - 112 leaves printed on the rectos only, containing the famous limericks & cartoons. Original cloth binding with gilt lettering and black decoration, worn, faded and marked, spine faded and rubbed, cloth starting to fray to head/tail, edges worn and rubbed. Contents good and more or less clean, a little finger soiling and slight spotting, front hinge cracked, binding somewhat shakey. A fair copy..
Synopsis
Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) was an English writer of nonsense, the most famous piece of which is The Owl and the Pussycat. He is also credited with popularizing the limerick, though there was some speculation as to whether his patron, the Earl of Derby, simply used Lear as a pseudonym for his own writings. Lear was also a successful illustrator and even spent some time tutoring Queen Victoria in drawing before his improper behaviour had him thrown out of court.
